My daughter insisted that I carve the pumpkin she got free at the farm on Saturday. I reluctantly agreed, but I think it turned out pretty good. She made a "scary face" and I sketched it on paper, then eyeballed it onto the pumpkin. Sometimes I impress myself with my artistry. Check it out, the first jack-o-lantern of the season:
I thought heavily of my friend Patti Ann Colt's book The Daddy Spell while I caressed the curves of this small gourd. What face does it want? Like Chad, the hero in her book, I felt what the pumpkin wanted to make of the face. Check out her website -- the book is set for a Thanksgiving release. Wait till you see the book cover.
